QuickCam Messenger working on Vista

When I first got Vista back on its release date I eagerly tried to install all my accessoris... and to my surprise most actually installed without any type of problem. My Logitech QuickCam Messenger webcam was not such a case. After looking around I found out it had no Vista Drivers, and logitech had no plans to release any. I tried older versions but still nothing. I decided the webcam would be retired.

Months passed and I really didnt miss the webcam, I only used it a few times to actually chat with people; I was more interested in using it for a few projects I thought up. Well now I had yet another project that required some type of video input, and me not having my video camera on hand would have to somehow bring the old webcam out of retirement.
Yet again I found myself searching the web and coming up with the same results I had months before, then I came across a solution. I've lost the link however I wrote down all the steps and figured with the amount of people out there with this problem, there really need to be more sites with the answer. This is such a site.

*NOTE* Have your webcam PLUGGED IN and DO NOT REMOVE IT until you have completed ALL the steps *NOTE*

First, download this nicely zipped file containing the 3 Logitech driver install files we will need to use.
-Unzip the files to your desktop and the Un-Package qc848enu & qc1050enu with Win-Rar into seperate folders on your desktop.

Then plug in your QuickCam and vista will try but not be able to install the drivers. This action is necessary  because now QuickCam IM will show up in the Hardware Manager as an Unknown device.

Now go to Hardware manager and click on Imaging device or Unknown device in the list and
select update drivers.

Point it to the unpacked qc848 driver and /find the Driver folder/then the Win New folder/then the MSGR folder and click OK.

Vista will say that it it found the drivers but could not install them properly because it could not find a specific item/object or file. I think it faults here when it can't find SP1 or SP2,because they are not vista files."But it has partly installed the drivers". When this happens click exit setup and get out of the Logitech install program.

Then you need to go back to Hardware Manager and once again click on the Unknown device
and once again update the driver only this time click on Let me Browse my Computer for Driver
Software.

When the next Box appears choose Let me pick from a list of device drivers on my
computer and "BINGO" you will see QuickCam IM in the list.

Now click on Have Disk and point it to the  unpacked qc1050 drivers and Browse to the Driver Folder double click on it and then open the X32 Folder double click on it and then open the MSGR Folder.

Click on the IvPEPIc.inf file and choose open then click on OK.

Then Magically Vista will give you a list of Logitech drivers to install.Choose the one for the QuickCam Messenger and Vista will tell you that it is not a vista driver but click OK anyway and it will install the working driver.

Then go back to the desktop and install the qc1100 driver & software
BUT PLEASE NOTE: DURING THE QUICKCAM  INSTALATION DO NOT UNPLUG THE QUICKCAM EVEN THOUGH IT TELLS YOU TO. Leave it plugged in from the beginning in step 1)to the end in step 11).

When it is finished installing drivers and software and finishes the setup process reboot the PC.
When it reboots you will have your QuickCam Messenger installed with the latest Drivers & Software working on
Vista.

Unfortunately I'm not entirely sure if it would work on any of the Vista x64 editions. I would assume it would, as long as you have the XP 64 drivers. It would definately be worth giving a try, what do you have to lose?

qc1100_x64 drivers are the only 64bit vista drivers I could find but the video is extremely distorted when I use the cam.

Hrmm unfortunatley this is why Logitech never made official drivers for it. After reading your post I took a look on a few site and have seen similar results. The fact that you were able to even get the camera working on a 64 bit version of Vista is great (better than most) however I cannot really suggest anything in paticular that I know will work. All I can suggest is maybe trying some different Windows XP x64 QuickCam drivers for other models that are slightly newer?

Either way please let me know how it works out, I'm rather curious now!

Forgot i posted here, but all in all SP1 for vista fixed my initial problem of distorted video and i used the same driver package i was trying all along. Logitech's website has the 64 bit drivers available for download, just in my experience there is compatibility issues if you dont have SP1 for vista installed.
